Ulysses III is an almost perfect app for writing with Markdown. I have written before about my love of plain text documents and Markdown but I had always found that it was a better system for iOS. I hadn’t found a Mac app that really did justice to the simple elegance it derived on iOS. Luckily I found Ulysses which is an, almost, perfect plain text/Markdown editor for Mac. I don’t often say an app is almost perfect, this whole site is a testament to my fickle mind, but Ulysses offers a feature set that is dream to write with. It offers menu bars on the left to quickly switch between documents and a writing environment on the right. Nothing crazy but it is useful. The big feature for me is the way it formats Markdown. Rather than having a bunch of messy links, it formats them into, what I call, ‘containers’. With the default settings it sets text that will be bolded to a pink colour, italic to blue, and highlights entire lines for block quotes.
It also offers in-app tagging, statistics, great export options and so much more. It may be expensive, but if you write plain text files in Markdown seriously check this app out.
