Ember is an app that allows you to save your inspirations. With an emphasis on visual inspiration it offers a handful of ways to organize your photos and web clippings that make finding what you need easy. The most important feature for me is the colour search feature. I can view all my “blue” photos or all my “red” ones.
So why would you use another app to save photos that are already on your camera role or saved in Finder? As somebody who saves a ton of photos from the web I saw the organizational aspects of the app as a real asset.
Note: I only use the iOS version. I have no doubt I would love the Mac version but it is simply too expensive for my needs. If I was a designer or an art student I would buy it in a second though. It looks so good that I may cave any day though.
Ember is not perfect and I personally don’t like the direction they are going. Originally its focus was photos but it added web clipping and other types of files, losing focus on what made Ember special. These features may seem like a normal evolution but the focus on special ways to view pictures was what drew me to the app. I already have Pocket, and Evernote to save everything to.
The second issue is that reviews on iTunes lead me to beleive syncing is a huge issue. The three current reviews all say syncing is slow or doesn’t work at all. Ember offers both Dropbox and iCloud sync but according to these people niether works well.
